OpenAI Pauses $200 Pro Subscriptions Due to Astra Demand

OpenAI Pauses Pro Subscriptions

OpenAI has temporarily paused subscriptions for its $200-per-month Pro plan, citing strain on its infrastructure. The decision follows overwhelming demand for Astra, the company's newest and most powerful model.

The move was announced on X by OpenAI's product leader, Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, who leads core products like Codex and ChatGPT at the AI lab. He explained that the Pro plan puts the most strain on its systems, which is why sign-ups for this service tier are now being disabled.

"We wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible," Sottiaux wrote. He added that the company's other plans, including the API and lower-cost Go and Plus plans, remain available.

OpenAI has not said how long sign-ups to the Pro tier may be disabled, or how many people are signing up daily, to give an idea of the scale of the demand.

Announcement and Reasoning

The pause was announced on X by OpenAI’s product leader, Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, who leads core products like Codex and ChatGPT at the AI lab. He explained that the Pro plan places the most strain on the company’s systems, which is why sign-ups for that $200-per-month tier are now being disabled.

“We wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible,” Sottiaux wrote. He added that the company’s other plans, including the API and the lower-cost Go and Plus plans, remain available.

The reasoning is deliberately narrow: rather than curtailing service across the board, OpenAI is limiting only the tier that consumes the most capacity. Existing Pro subscribers are unaffected, and the pause applies solely to new sign-ups.

The company has not said how long sign-ups to the Pro tier may be disabled, nor how many people are signing up daily, leaving the scale of the demand unclear.

Unprecedented Demand and Warning

OpenAI had already signalled that a change of this kind might be coming. On Wednesday, Sottiaux wrote that demand for Astra was “really unprecedented,” adding that the company was pulling all the levers possible to sustain it. He noted that he had not seen anything like it, even though OpenAI had been through very steep growth before.

Sottiaux said the priority would always be to keep excellent service for existing users, but warned that OpenAI might have to pause new Pro subscriptions for a bit if the demand continued.

What remains unclear is the scale and duration of the problem. OpenAI has not said how long sign-ups to the Pro tier may be disabled, nor how many people are signing up daily, which would give an idea of the demand’s size.

Astra Launch and Rollout

Astra launched on September 3 and has been rolling out across OpenAI's plans, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business accounts, in addition to its API. The model promises a major leap forward in areas like AI reasoning, coding, and computer use — all areas of steep competition.

OpenAI even heralded Astra as the beginning of the AGI era, and a generational leap, stoking demand even more.

That enthusiasm has come at a cost. Demand for the model has led OpenAI to temporarily pause subscriptions for its $200-per-month Pro plan, citing strain on its infrastructure. According to product leader Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, the Pro plan puts the most strain on the company's systems, which is why sign-ups for that tier are now being disabled.
