Why Nintendo Is Raising Its Switch 2 Sales Expectations
Nintendo is raising its Switch 2 sales expectations after the console’s explosive global success shattered its original projections. The Japanese gaming powerhouse now expects to sell 19 million units by March 2026, up from its earlier forecast of 15 million. Since its June launch, over 10 million Switch 2 consoles have already reached players, making it the fastest-selling gaming console in history.
This rapid momentum, driven by strong hardware and software sales, reflects both sustained demand and a growing lineup of exclusive Nintendo titles that continue to capture fans worldwide.
How Many Switch 2 Units Has Nintendo Sold So Far?
According to Nintendo’s latest earnings report, 10.36 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold since launch, with 4.54 million of those during the most recent financial period. Alongside that, more than 20.62 million Switch 2 games have been sold globally, prompting the company to slightly lift its game sales forecast from 45 million to 48 million for the fiscal year.
This success has also led to a 110% increase in total revenue, now reaching ¥1,099.5 billion (around $7.1 billion) between April and September — nearly double last year’s performance for the same period.
What’s Driving the Switch 2’s Massive Growth?
The combination of nostalgia, innovation, and exclusive game titles continues to fuel the Switch 2’s dominance. Nintendo’s strategy of merging handheld flexibility with next-gen performance is resonating deeply with gamers. Additionally, improved supply chains, US tariff considerations, and positive word of mouth have solidified its market lead.
Nintendo also forecasts total sales of ¥2,250 billion ($14.6 billion) by the end of the fiscal year, underscoring the console’s impact on its financial outlook.
Can the Switch 2 Become Nintendo’s Best-Selling Console Ever?
With the original Switch nearing 154 million lifetime sales, it’s on the verge of overtaking the Nintendo DS as the company’s most successful console. The Switch 2’s record-breaking start makes it highly likely to surpass both predecessors. For context, the PlayStation 2 still holds the all-time record at 160 million units sold — a target Nintendo may soon challenge if current trends continue.
If momentum holds, the Switch 2 could rewrite gaming history and establish itself as Nintendo’s defining console of the decade.
