Loop Biotech calls their version the “Living Cocoon,” and it’s grown entirely from mycelium in just seven days. Mycelium has already proven useful in sustainable packaging and even fashion, but its introduction into the death care industry signals a significant shift toward nature-positive practices. The first U.S. burial using a mushroom casket took place in June in Maine. It was a deeply personal affair, honoring a man who had always expressed his wish to “be buried naked in the woods.” That wish was fulfilled by his daughter, Marsya Ancker, with the help of Loop Biotech. Company founder Bob Hendrikx was present at the ceremony, which he called a meaningful milestone. The idea originated during his time at Delft University of Technology, where he was studying mycelium for sustainable housing. A conversation about death sparked the idea: “Why not make this a casket?”
