Microsoft Embraces OpenAI Rival Anthropic To Improve Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft embraces OpenAI rival Anthropic to improve Microsoft 365 apps, marking a major step in giving users more AI model choices. Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 are now available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, offering fresh alternatives alongside OpenAI’s models. This move signals Microsoft’s commitment to diversify AI innovation and empower businesses with tailored solutions.
Anthropic’s Claude Models Arrive In Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot has largely relied on OpenAI’s advanced models, but the addition of Anthropic changes the game. With Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 now integrated, users can take advantage of Anthropic’s strengths in reasoning, context handling, and enterprise-focused AI.
Charles Lamanna, president of Microsoft’s business and industry Copilot team, emphasized the importance of choice: “Copilot will continue to be powered by OpenAI’s latest models, and now our customers will have the flexibility to use Anthropic models too.”
New Flexibility For Researcher And Copilot Studio
The update also improves Microsoft’s Researcher agent and Copilot Studio. Researcher users will now see a “Try Claude” button in Microsoft 365 Copilot, letting them instantly switch to Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.1. This makes it simple to compare outputs between OpenAI and Anthropic models, depending on the task.
In Copilot Studio, businesses can build custom agents powered by either OpenAI or Anthropic, offering greater flexibility for specialized workflows.
Why This Move Matters
By welcoming Anthropic into Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft is signaling its openness to a multi-model future. Instead of relying solely on OpenAI, the company is expanding its AI toolkit to provide businesses with diverse, reliable options.
For enterprises, this means more control, better performance across varied tasks, and AI tuned to specific industry needs. For Microsoft, it strengthens Copilot as a versatile platform at the center of modern productivity.
