Meta Moves Into Nuclear Energy to Power AI Expansion
Meta is stepping up its energy strategy to support the next generation of AI. On January 10, the tech giant announced agreements with three U.S. nuclear energy companies to secure massive power supplies for its expanding AI infrastructure. These partnerships aim to ensure reliable, clean energy for Meta’s data centers while supporting innovation in nuclear technology.
Strategic Partnerships with Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo
Meta has inked deals with Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo to provide a mix of existing and future nuclear energy capacity. Vistra, a major electricity and power generation company, will supply over 2.1 GW from its Ohio nuclear plants, including capacity upgrades totaling 433 MW across Ohio and Pennsylvania. TerraPower will deliver energy from two new Natrium® reactors by 2032, with potential expansion to six more units generating 2.1 GW by 2035.
Oklo Collaboration Targets Next-Gen Nuclear Power
The partnership with Oklo focuses on developing the Aurora power plant in Pike County, Ohio, which could deliver up to 1.2 GW of clean baseload power as early as 2030. Oklo, backed by Sam Altman, has been positioning itself as a nuclear energy provider for data centers. This project underscores a growing trend where AI companies seek early access to emerging nuclear technologies.
Job Creation and Regional Energy Impact
Meta says these deals will create thousands of skilled jobs in Ohio and Pennsylvania, extend the life of existing nuclear plants, and inject new energy into the regional grid. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, called the agreements “a milestone in corporate nuclear energy purchasing” and emphasized the role of advanced data centers in maintaining U.S. AI leadership.
