Lucid kicks off its Nuro-Uber robotaxi deal with delivery of first vehicle, marking the beginning of a massive plan to put 20,000 autonomous cars on U.S. roads over the next six years. The milestone came with the handoff of the first Lucid Gravity SUV, which will now undergo retrofitting for self-driving technology.
The initial Gravity SUV was built at Lucid’s Casa Grande, Arizona, plant before being shipped to the company’s Newark, California, headquarters. There, Nuro’s team installed sensors and hardware that will power its autonomous system. While this prototype required special handling, future retrofits will take place directly on Lucid’s assembly line to streamline deployment.
Now stationed at Nuro’s Santa Clara facility, the SUV is being integrated with the company’s Nuro Driver software. Engineers are preparing for extensive testing and validation before the vehicle can hit public roads. According to the companies, the first ride-ready robotaxi could launch on Uber’s network as early as next year.
Delivering the first vehicle is a crucial milestone, but scaling to 20,000 robotaxis will take years. Nuro executives say the deal could expand well beyond that number, making it one of the largest robotaxi commitments to date.
The move also highlights growing competition in autonomous ridesharing. Waymo currently runs fewer than 2,000 vehicles across select markets, while Tesla’s so-called “robotaxis” remain limited and heavily monitored. Lucid and Nuro are aiming much higher.
The partnership shows how ambitious the autonomous vehicle industry remains, even after years of missed promises. If successful, Lucid, Nuro, and Uber could bring driverless luxury SUVs to everyday riders at scale — something that once seemed like science fiction.
For now, Lucid kicks off its Nuro-Uber robotaxi deal with delivery of first vehicle, but the real test will be whether thousands more follow in the years to come.
