Instacart Reportedly Holds Sale Talks With DoorDash and Uber

Instacart reportedly explores a sale

Instacart has hired an investment bank to help evaluate its options, according to The Information. The grocery delivery company has also held acquisition talks with DoorDash, the publication reported Friday.

The reports point to a possible sale to a larger competitor, though they do not establish that a deal is imminent. Bloomberg described the discussions as early-stage and said they might not lead to a sale. Instacart could be considering its options as the grocery delivery market becomes more competitive, but the reports do not say that the company has decided to sell.

Instacart currently has a market capitalisation of more than $13 billion, and its stock is up 25% year to date. An Instacart spokesperson declined to comment on the reported sale discussions. Bloomberg also reported that Instacart had spoken with Uber, which reportedly walked away from those talks.

Uber also discussed a potential deal

Bloomberg reported that Instacart had also held talks with Uber about a possible acquisition. However, Uber reportedly walked away from those discussions, leaving the outcome of the conversations uncertain.

The report described the discussions as early-stage and cautioned that they might not lead to a sale. While talks with a potential buyer can signal that a company is considering its options, they do not mean a deal is imminent or that Instacart has agreed to sell.

Instacart declined to comment on the reports. Its reported conversations with Uber came alongside separate acquisition talks with DoorDash, according to Bloomberg and The Information. With Uber reportedly stepping away and no confirmed agreement, the possibility of a transaction remained uncertain.

Instacart's market position

Instacart’s market capitalization is above $13 billion, and its stock is up 25% year to date. Those figures could make this a favorable moment for the grocery delivery company to consider a sale, allowing it to pursue a desirable price while its shares have gained value.

Timing may also matter as competition in grocery delivery increases. Selling before the market becomes more competitive could appeal to Instacart, though the reported discussions are still early and may not lead to a deal. The company’s current valuation and year-to-date stock performance provide context for why a sale might be under consideration, but they do not establish that Instacart has decided to sell.

For a potential buyer, Instacart’s market position would be part of the conversation alongside the broader competitive landscape. For Instacart, the choice may be whether to pursue a transaction while its market capitalization exceeds $13 billion and its stock is up for the year, or to remain independent as competition grows.

Reports move shares

An Instacart spokesperson declined to comment on reports that the grocery delivery company may be exploring a sale. The reports nevertheless prompted a sharp move in its stock: Instacart shares rose more than 9.2% on Friday.

Uber and DoorDash shares declined that day, even as both companies were mentioned in reports about possible acquisition discussions. The Information reported that Instacart had held talks with DoorDash, while Bloomberg reported that it had also talked with Uber. Uber reportedly walked away from those discussions.

The contrasting share-price moves reflect the immediate market reaction to the reports, not a confirmed transaction. Bloomberg noted that discussions were at an early stage and might not result in a sale. For now, Instacart’s spokesperson has offered no comment, and the reported talks have not established that the company will be acquired.
