Apple’s latest flagship has hit the market, but early buyers are noticing a flaw. iFixit zooms in on reports of an iPhone 17 Pro scratch problem, specifically around the new camera plateau. Their teardown video takes a closer look at why the anodized aluminum finish is showing marks so easily.
The iPhone 17 Pro’s anodized aluminum design is sleek, but the sharp edges around the raised camera plateau appear vulnerable. Users have shared images of scratches forming quickly, raising concerns about long-term durability. iFixit’s microscopic inspection reveals just how visible these marks are once the protective finish wears down.
To get to the bottom of it, iFixit consulted David Niebuhr, a mechanical engineering professor. He explained that the problem lies in how the anodization process interacts with sharp corners. Unlike flat surfaces, these edges leave the aluminum more exposed, making scratches stand out with spalling damage. Niebuhr noted, “Apple could have prevented this by making a more gradual curve and avoiding a relatively sharp corner.”
While scratches won’t affect the phone’s performance, they may frustrate users who value a pristine design. Cases and protective skins could help minimize visible wear, especially around the vulnerable camera bump. iFixit’s findings suggest Apple may need to rethink its material finish in future models to balance aesthetics with durability.
This isn’t the first time Apple devices have drawn attention for their scratch resistance—or lack thereof. With the iPhone 17 Pro priced at a premium, even small cosmetic flaws can influence buyer sentiment.
