The new HMD’s Touch 4G is a dumb-smart-phone designed to bring back the simplicity of old-school devices while keeping just enough modern functionality. Available only in India for now, it blurs the line between feature phones and smartphones — offering touchscreen controls, browser apps, and even video calling for just ₹4,999 (about $55).
At first glance, the HMD Touch 4G looks like a compact smartphone straight out of the early 2010s. Its small 3.2-inch display and 100g weight make it feel refreshingly light compared to today’s bulky flagships. But don’t get too excited — despite the design, this isn’t your next Android device.
Instead of Android, the HMD’s Touch 4G runs on a custom operating system called RTOS Touch. This means you won’t have access to the Google Play Store or traditional Android apps. Instead, it supports HMD’s own Cloud Phone Service — a set of lightweight browser-based apps for essential tasks.
You’ll still be able to send group messages and make video calls, but only through Express Chat, HMD’s proprietary messaging app that also works on Android and iOS. To really make it useful, you’ll need your friends to install the app too.
While the HMD Touch 4G includes practical features like a headphone jack and USB-C charging, its specs are barebones. It packs just 128MB of internal storage, meaning you’ll almost certainly need a microSD card for photos or downloads.
But that’s part of the appeal. The phone’s minimalist design and limited capabilities encourage you to disconnect from distractions while still offering enough tools for communication and light browsing.
In a world of AI-driven smartphones and feature-packed flagships, HMD’s Touch 4G is a dumb-smart-phone that stands out by going back to basics. It’s a nod to the era of pocket-sized devices — simple, practical, and charmingly unpretentious.
It’s unlikely to make its way to the US anytime soon, but for users in India seeking a balance between connectivity and minimalism, the Touch 4G could hit the sweet spot.
