Google Sheets AI Function Now Uses Gemini to Auto-Fill Your Spreadsheet
If you've ever wished Google Sheets could write for you, the new Google Sheets AI function powered by Gemini is here to do just that. Google has introduced a smart tool that lets you generate, summarize, or categorize text directly in your spreadsheet—saving time and boosting productivity. Whether you're crafting ad copy or organizing customer feedback, this AI function can fill in empty cells using data from selected ranges.
How Google Sheets AI Function Works with Gemini
Google's Gemini AI is now integrated into Sheets through a simple function: =AI(). This allows users to generate content based on the context within specific cells. For example, if you have a list of customer types and campaign goals, Gemini can write tailored ad copy with just a line of formula. The syntax looks like this:=AI("Write ad copy for the product. Cater it to the objective and target audience.", A2:C2).
You can also use it to summarize customer feedback or categorize support tickets into tags like “compliment” or “return request.”
Key Limitations of the Google Sheets AI Function
While the Google Sheets AI function is powerful, it comes with a few limitations. The tool only supports text output (no images or charts yet), and it’s limited to working with a maximum of 200 selected cells at a time. It also can’t scan your full Google Drive or the entire spreadsheet—just the specific cells you select. You’ll need to rerun the function for larger datasets, which could slow down some workflows.
Who Can Use the Google Sheets AI Function Now?
The new Gemini-powered AI function is rolling out to Google Workspace users on business and enterprise plans. It's also available to subscribers of Gemini AI Pro, Ultra, and Gemini for Education. If you're on one of these plans, you can already start experimenting with this feature and explore the full list of use cases on Google’s support page.
