Google Gemini to Replace Google Assistant Without Compromising Privacy
Android is entering a new era of AI with Google Gemini replacing Google Assistant later this year. Starting July 7, 2025, Gemini will be able to perform key device tasks—like sending messages, making calls, and setting alarms—without requiring you to enable data-sharing features. The shift lets users experience hands-free convenience while still controlling how their data is used, addressing one of the most common concerns about AI integration on smartphones.
Gemini Assistant Can Now Control Apps with Privacy Settings Off
With the upcoming update, Google Gemini can interact with system apps like Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities—even when the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting is turned off. Previously, disabling this setting meant Gemini couldn’t carry out in-app functions. But now, Android users can access Gemini’s personal assistant features without contributing to AI model training, enhancing privacy for those who prefer minimal data collection.
Will Gemini Have Full Access to Your Android? Google Clarifies
When news of the change first emerged, many users questioned whether Gemini would gain unrestricted access to sensitive data. Google clarified that users retain full control and can disable app connections at any time. Gemini will save conversations for up to 72 hours for security, but these won’t be used to improve Google’s AI if Apps Activity is disabled—offering a better balance between privacy and functionality.
Why Gemini Is Set to Replace Google Assistant
This rollout is part of a larger plan to replace Google Assistant with Gemini as Android’s primary AI tool. With the ability to perform daily tasks without feeding into Google's AI training, Gemini represents a shift toward more transparent, privacy-aware AI. Whether you want to make a quick call or send a WhatsApp message hands-free, you can now rely on Gemini without your interactions being logged long-term—unless you choose otherwise.
