Editing videos stored in Google Drive just got easier with a new shortcut to Google Vids. The feature allows users to launch Google Vids directly while previewing videos in Drive, eliminating the need to open the editor manually. This update makes it faster to trim clips, add text or music, and apply simple edits without leaving the Drive interface, helping users save time and streamline their workflow.
The new shortcut adds an “Open” button at the top-right corner when previewing a video file in Google Drive. With one click, the video opens directly in Google Vids, where users can make quick edits. This integration reduces unnecessary steps, offering a smoother experience for both personal and professional video projects. Workspace organization admins can also control whether the shortcut remains enabled by default.
Google began rolling out the Drive shortcut for video editing on August 21, 2025, though availability may take up to two weeks to reach all users. By default, the feature is enabled, but administrators of Workspace accounts have the option to disable it if needed. This ensures flexibility for teams managing collaborative projects where editing permissions might vary.
This update builds on Google’s ongoing improvements to video tools within Drive. In 2024, the platform introduced an upgraded video player for smoother playback. More recently, Gemini AI was integrated to summarize Drive videos, making it easier to find key details without watching the full file. The addition of a quick shortcut to Google Vids reinforces Google’s push to enhance productivity and creativity within its ecosystem.
