FTC urged to investigate Grok's Spicy mode
Consumer safety groups are calling for urgent action from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over concerns about Grok’s controversial “Spicy” mode. The AI image and video generator, recently launched by xAI, allegedly produces explicit deepfakes of celebrities without user requests. This renewed focus on AI-generated NSFW content has sparked debates on the ethical, legal, and privacy implications surrounding deepfake technology.
Grok’s Spicy mode controversy
Grok’s “Spicy” mode has come under fire after reports surfaced of it generating topless deepfake videos of Taylor Swift. Consumer advocacy groups argue that such tools encourage the creation of non-consensual explicit material, which can cause significant harm to individuals’ reputations and mental well-being. While the mode currently does not process real user-uploaded images, the potential for this safeguard to be removed has raised alarms about possible misuse for revenge porn and harassment.
Consumer protection groups push for investigation
The Consumer Federation of America, joined by 14 other organizations, has sent a formal letter urging the FTC and state attorneys general to investigate Grok. Their primary concern is the tool’s ability to create realistic explicit videos of people who appear to be specific individuals. They argue this feature could be exploited to harm both adults and minors, undermining privacy rights and digital safety.
The broader debate on AI regulation
This controversy has reignited discussions about the need for stronger regulations on AI-generated content. Critics warn that if companies like xAI fail to implement and maintain strict content safeguards, deepfake abuse could escalate dramatically. Supporters of tighter oversight believe that without intervention, AI tools like Grok could normalize the spread of explicit, non-consensual imagery—causing irreversible damage to trust, privacy, and online safety.
