Framework Desktop PCs See Price Hikes as RAM Costs Soar
Framework, the modular PC brand, has raised prices across its desktop lineup, citing skyrocketing RAM costs. PC enthusiasts searching for affordable, high-performance systems may notice the jump immediately. The base model with a Ryzen AI Max 385 processor and 32GB of RAM now costs $1,139, up from $1,099. At the high end, the top-tier 128GB RAM configuration surged to $2,459 from $1,999—a $460 increase that has caught many buyers off guard.
CEO Nirav Patel explained in a December blog post update that the company delayed raising prices as long as possible. However, with LPDDR5x memory prices continuing to climb, the adjustment became unavoidable.
DDR5 Prices Surge as AI Demand Intensifies
The PC market’s RAM crunch is driven largely by the AI boom. Demand for DDR5 memory has skyrocketed, with prices up more than 260% in major markets since September 2025. Analysts warn that by mid-2026, a standard 32GB DDR5 module could top $500. Framework’s price adjustments reflect the broader pressure on hardware manufacturers to manage rising component costs while maintaining modular PC options for users.
Industry-Wide Price Pressure Hits Major Brands
Framework isn’t alone in grappling with memory shortages. Dell, ASUS, and Raspberry Pi have all announced price increases for their systems due to supply constraints. IDC analysts predict the broader PC market could see unit shipments decline by as much as 9% in 2026. This trend highlights how component shortages ripple through pricing and availability, affecting both consumers and businesses seeking new systems.
No Quick Fix for DRAM Shortages
Industry experts caution that relief is years away. New DRAM manufacturing capacity is not expected to meaningfully impact supply until 2028, with some analysts projecting constraints could persist through 2031. For buyers, this means rising PC costs and limited availability may continue for the foreseeable future, especially for high-performance systems with large RAM configurations.
Framework’s latest pricing update underscores the challenges facing PC makers and consumers alike as the demand for memory-intensive tasks grows, fueled by AI workloads and more powerful desktop systems.
