Firefox Project Nova: A Rounded Redesign with Privacy-First AI Controls
Firefox is undergoing a major visual overhaul with Project Nova, a design refresh that introduces rounded UI elements, bubble-like tabs, and a fire-inspired color palette. The update, rolling out later this year, focuses on making privacy settings and AI controls easier to find and use. Mozilla promises a more intuitive experience, including a single switch to disable all present and future AI features.
Key Design Changes in Project Nova
The new design features rounded corners throughout the browser, from tabs to toolbars. Mozilla is also updating icons for better consistency across light and dark themes. The refreshed color palette draws inspiration from Firefox's iconic fire branding, creating a cohesive visual identity.
Compact Mode Returns
One of the most requested features is making a comeback: compact mode. This setting condenses browser controls like forward and backward buttons, freeing up screen space for content. Users can also expect easier access to tab groups, split view, and vertical tabs.
Enhanced Privacy and AI Controls
Project Nova places a strong emphasis on privacy. The redesigned Settings section makes it straightforward to locate and adjust privacy options, including a dedicated toggle for turning off all AI features. Mozilla emphasizes that AI models are not downloaded to your computer unless you explicitly choose to use them, even if you haven't activated the complete block.
Managing AI Features
Firefox already offers more transparency than competitors like Google Chrome when it comes to AI storage. Users can easily see which AI models are installed and how much space they occupy, addressing concerns about unwanted downloads.
Web Serial API Support Now Available
While the redesign is coming later, Mozilla has already released a notable new feature: Web Serial API support in Firefox 151. This API allows websites to control hardware devices or deliver firmware directly from the browser, eliminating the need for native applications or installers.
Customization and Productivity Upgrades
Project Nova expands customization options with new wallpapers and themes. Color themes now apply to the entire browser window and include both light and dark modes, similar to Chrome's approach. Mozilla is also exploring controls for the shape of tabs and other UI elements, giving users more control over their browsing experience.
Firefox 151 Updates
The latest stable release, Firefox 151, already includes some design improvements: an updated Firefox Home page, new wallpapers, and the ability to merge multiple PDFs together in the browser's built-in PDF viewer. These updates pave the way for the larger Project Nova rollout.
What to Expect Later This Year
Mozilla plans to begin rolling out Project Nova in stages later this year. The redesign aims to modernize Firefox while retaining its core focus on privacy, security, and user control. With compact mode, improved customization, and easy-to-find AI settings, Firefox is positioning itself as a strong alternative for privacy-conscious users.
