Figma is rolling out three powerful AI-driven tools designed to simplify image editing without leaving the platform. Users can now erase objects, isolate elements, and expand images to fit new dimensions—all within Figma Design and Figma Draw. These updates aim to reduce reliance on other software, making Figma a one-stop creative hub for designers and creators.
The new Erase Object and Isolate Object features integrate seamlessly with Figma’s lasso tool. Users can draw around an object or person, then instantly remove it from the image while automatically filling in the background. Alternatively, the Isolate Object option separates the selection from the background, allowing repositioning or independent edits. This gives designers more control over image composition without juggling multiple platforms.
Figma’s Expand Image tool allows users to adjust images to new aspect ratios while maintaining a natural look. Using generative AI, the tool fills extended areas with content that blends seamlessly into the original image. This mirrors Adobe’s Generative Expand in Photoshop but is now available natively in Figma, cutting the need for additional software.
All new tools are housed in Figma’s redesigned image editing toolbar, which also includes existing features like Remove Background. This consolidation creates a centralized workspace, allowing users to access essential AI editing capabilities in one location for faster, more efficient workflows.
While Figma’s AI tools don’t yet match Adobe’s full suite of creative features, the move signals the platform’s commitment to empowering designers with native AI capabilities. By offering object removal, isolation, and image expansion in-app, Figma reduces the need to switch between multiple programs, streamlining the creative process.
Graphic designers, UX/UI professionals, and content creators are the primary beneficiaries. Tasks that once required multiple apps and tedious manual editing—like background removal, resizing images for different formats, or repositioning elements—can now be handled directly in Figma. This not only saves time but also keeps all edits in a single project environment.
With these enhancements, Figma demonstrates how AI can simplify complex editing tasks while maintaining a clean, user-friendly interface. The tools also reflect a broader trend in design software: integrating AI directly into core workflows rather than relying on add-ons or external programs. For Figma users, this means faster, smarter, and more intuitive design processes.
