Curious how solid-state batteries perform under intense heat? Finnish startup Donut Lab is showing that its technology can not only survive extreme conditions but even improve its energy output. Recent tests conducted by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland reveal that the startup’s battery thrives in temperatures that would damage conventional lithium-ion cells.
The breakthrough suggests solid-state batteries could transform electric vehicles and other high-demand electronics where heat management has always been a challenge. Here’s what the heat tests uncovered.
To measure performance, VTT tested a 3.6V/26Ah solid-state battery under three conditions: normal room temperature (20°C), high heat (80°C), and extreme heat (100°C). The setup included a steel plate applying pressure to the battery and a heatsink within a controlled chamber to simulate real-world stress.
The results were surprising. At room temperature, the battery delivered 24.9Ah—establishing the baseline. At 80°C, it delivered 27.5Ah, roughly 110.5% of its room-temperature capacity. At 100°C, the battery still produced 27.6Ah, slightly higher than its baseline and proving that heat actually enhanced its efficiency.
Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, which lose efficiency and risk permanent damage under high temperatures, Donut Lab’s solid-state technology thrives when heated. VTT noted that the cell became more efficient at elevated temperatures, meaning it could provide more energy instead of degrading.
This capability could address a major pain point for EV manufacturers, who often struggle with battery cooling during fast charging and extreme weather conditions. Heat-resistant batteries like this one could reduce reliance on heavy cooling systems and extend battery life.
While the battery excelled in energy performance, extreme heat did affect its physical structure. The test found that the pouch lost its vacuum seal at 100°C, a minor setback that could be addressed with improved casing materials. Despite this, the battery remained fully functional and could be recharged, proving durability under stress that would compromise standard lithium-ion cells.
The combination of efficiency gain and resilience makes Donut Lab’s technology a potential game-changer for high-performance applications beyond electric vehicles, including aerospace and industrial electronics.
