Cursor, the AI coding startup nearing acquisition by SpaceX, has launched its first country-specific subscription plan in India. Called Cursor Start, the plan is priced at ₹649 per month (about $7) — significantly lower than the standard $20/month Pro subscription. This move aims to capture India's massive developer market, which already ranks as Cursor's third-largest globally and boasts the highest concentration of power users. The startup's user base in India has more than tripled in the past year.
The plan is billed in Indian rupees and supports payments via credit/debit cards and India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Cursor is implementing multiple checks to ensure the plan is available only to individual users in India, including measures to block VPN access. Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, stated that the pricing is commercially sustainable thanks to reliance on Cursor's own AI models rather than third-party frontier models.
India has emerged as one of the world's largest software developer hubs. GitHub reports that India has over 27 million developers on its platform — second only to the U.S. — with more than 2 million joining in 2026 alone. Green noted that India's technical competency and engineering talent make it a natural fit for localized pricing. Cursor Start is designed to broaden access for developers who need more AI-assisted coding capacity than the free tier offers without moving to the full Pro subscription.
Cursor is not alone in tailoring pricing for India. OpenAI and Anthropic have also rolled out India-specific plans over the past year. OpenAI's sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan was first introduced in India before expanding to other markets, providing a precedent for Cursor's strategy.
Cursor Start includes access to Cursor's Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, with higher usage limits than the free tier. Additional features include cloud agents, the iOS app, plug-ins, Model Context Protocol support, hooks, and skills. However, it does not include frontier AI models from OpenAI or Anthropic, nor advanced features like Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK — those remain exclusive to the $20/month Pro plan.
Cursor is expanding its physical presence in India with new hires. The startup recently hired its first salesperson in India and expects another leader to join in Delhi. It is also building out a government affairs office and adding three technical customer support staff in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
Enterprise adoption is still early, driven mainly by individual developers, startups, and universities. Green sees significant opportunities in banking and large enterprises as local sales efforts ramp up. If the India pricing model proves successful, Cursor may expand localized pricing to other markets. SpaceX's existing presence in India through Starlink could help Cursor scale faster once the acquisition closes (expected in Q3).
Elon Musk's SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor in a $60 billion all-stock deal following SpaceX's IPO. The acquisition is expected to close in Q3. SpaceX has been partnered with Cursor since April to develop next-generation coding and knowledge work AI. Green emphasized that Cursor's India expansion plans were already in motion before the deal, and the startup will operate independently until the transaction closes.
For Indian developers, Cursor Start offers an affordable entry point into AI-assisted coding. Combined with the potential for SpaceX's infrastructure to accelerate growth, Cursor's India push signals a major commitment to one of the fastest-growing AI markets worldwide.
