Apple is pushing back hard against Elon Musk’s latest legal fight. In newly filed court documents, Apple asks judge to toss Musk’s lawsuit over ChatGPT on iPhone, dismissing the billionaire’s claims as nothing more than “speculation on top of speculation.”
The lawsuit, filed in August by Musk’s companies X Corp and xAI, alleges that Apple’s partnership with OpenAI gives ChatGPT an unfair advantage on the iPhone. Musk argues this deal stifles competition and hurts rival AI tools like Grok, the chatbot built by xAI.
Apple’s Legal Counter To Musk
Apple’s lawyers argue that Musk’s claims lack evidence. They told the court that X and xAI had failed to “plausibly” show any harm from the partnership. Apple also emphasized that the agreement with OpenAI is not exclusive, meaning it can—and plans to—work with other generative AI providers in the future.
In other words, Apple says its partnership doesn’t shut the door on competition. The company stressed that antitrust law doesn’t require it to integrate “every other chatbot on the market,” regardless of quality or market standing.
