The difference stems from satellite orbits: low-earth orbit satellites, like Starlink, offer lower latency, while geostationary systems, like Viasat, cover wider areas but with slower response times.
Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer, explained that their mix of geostationary, multi-orbit, and low-earth orbit satellites ensures passengers get consistently fast connections no matter the route. The company’s plan is to roll out AT&T Wi-Fi across narrow-body and dual-class regional jets first, followed by full fleet coverage.
