I’ve been testing Alexa Plus through its Early Access program for a few months now. While it introduces impressive AI upgrades and feels like Amazon’s answer to ChatGPT, it still struggles with consistency, speed, and deeper smart home integration.
Alexa Plus: A Smarter Assistant With Limitations
To reinvent Alexa, Amazon had to rebuild it from the ground up. The result is Alexa Plus — a hybrid personal assistant, smart home hub, and generative AI tool.
On paper, this sounds like the future. In practice, Alexa Plus often feels like a half-step forward. It’s smarter than the old Alexa, yes, but it doesn’t yet excel at being your smart home brain, productivity partner, or conversational AI.
What Works Well With Alexa Plus
One of the biggest upgrades is natural language support. I no longer have to repeat “Alexa” before every command. I can interrupt, hesitate, change my mind mid-sentence, and the assistant still understands.
This makes controlling lights, locks, and even my robot vacuum feel far more natural. It’s closer to how we want to talk to technology — casual, fluid, and human-like.
Where Alexa Plus Still Falls Short
Despite the AI upgrades, Alexa Plus often feels underpowered. Running on limited hardware and with shallow integrations into my smart home, it struggles to deliver consistently smooth performance.
Sometimes commands lag. Other times, Alexa Plus misinterprets tasks that competitors like Google Assistant or Apple’s Siri might handle better. The power is there — but Amazon hasn’t fully unlocked it.
Why Better Hardware Matters
Amazon’s upcoming Echo hardware could be the missing piece. If Alexa Plus is paired with stronger, more capable devices, the assistant could finally live up to its AI-powered promise.
Until then, Alexa Plus is smarter — but it’s not yet smart enough to run the smart home of the future.

Generative AI should mark a turning point for the smart home. Imagine a system where your assistant predicts needs, manages your home proactively, and blends naturally into daily life.
Right now, Alexa Plus is on the path — but not there yet. It shows the potential of AI-driven assistants, while reminding us that great software still needs powerful hardware and deep integrations to shine.
Alexa Plus is a promising reinvention, but it’s still very much in Beta mode. Amazon deserves credit for rethinking Alexa from scratch, but without faster hardware and smarter integrations, Alexa Plus risks falling short of the futuristic “ambient home” experience we’ve all been waiting for.
For now, Alexa Plus is smarter — but it’s not yet smart enough to replace the dream of a truly intelligent home assistant.
