Shortcuts Playground is a powerful AI tool for creating Apple Shortcuts using natural language input. Developed by Federico Viticci of MacStories, this plugin works with Claude Code and OpenAI Codex to generate shortcuts on demand. Instead of waiting for the rumored iOS 27 update that will bring native AI shortcut creation, you can start using this solution today.
Users simply type a short sentence describing the shortcut they need. The AI processes the request, generates the shortcut code, and outputs a file ready to upload to Apple’s Shortcuts app. The entire process takes just a few minutes.
Apple is reportedly adding an AI-powered shortcuts feature in iOS 27, but that update may be months away. Shortcuts Playground gives you early access to similar functionality. It is free and open source, available on GitHub, and fully transparent—users can inspect the code and documentation.
Viticci has shared several example shortcuts created with the tool:
While the AI can correct errors during creation, Viticci warns that generated shortcuts are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Always review and test the output before relying on it.
To install Shortcuts Playground, provide Claude Code or OpenAI Codex with the link to the GitHub repository. The agent will find the plugin marketplace and install it automatically.
Club MacStories+ and Premier members can access Shortcuts Playground as a generative shortcut. Once the main plugin is installed on a Mac, you can create additional shortcuts directly and install them on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Viticci is also launching a redesigned MacStories Shortcuts Archive featuring over 400 pre-built shortcut options. This complements Shortcuts Playground, giving you both AI-generated and handcrafted shortcuts.
