Etsy Requires an Unedited First Listing Photo Etsy has clarified that the first photo in a listing must show the item as it is, without digital alteration. Sellers may still use editing tools to improve other listing images, but the main photo needs to accurately represent the product buyers will receive. That means sellers should not use AI or other editing software to add, remove, or change elements in the first image. For example, the photo should not be digitally modified to make an item look different from the actual product. The requirement is about truthful representation: buyers should be able to rely on the first image when deciding what to purchase. Sellers can continue to present their work attractively through the setting and composition of a photograph. The important distinction is between taking a clear, appealing photo of the real item and altering the image itself. If you use edited photos elsewhere in a listing, make sure the first image remains an unedited view of the product. This gives shoppers an accurate first impression while allowing additional images to provide further context. Etsy’s New AI Policies Etsy has updated its creativity standards to address items made with artificial intelligence. The platform now allows sellers to list products created with AI, but sellers must disclose when they use AI in the creative process. This applies to items such as artwork generated from a seller’s prompts and designs created with AI tools. The disclosure requirement is intended to give shoppers clearer information about how a product was made. Sellers should describe their use of AI in the listing description, rather than presenting AI-generated work as entirely handmade or made without AI assistance. Etsy’s policy still requires items to meet its standards for creativity and seller involvement; using an AI tool does not remove those requirements. These rules distinguish between using AI as part of a seller’s creative process and simply reselling items made by someone else. Sellers remain responsible for the products they list and for accurately describing them. By making AI use explicit, Etsy aims to preserve transparency for buyers while allowing sellers to incorporate new tools into their work. Other Changes to Etsy’s Rules Etsy has also updated rules beyond listing photos and AI. One change clarifies that sellers may not use another person’s work without permission, including by copying a design or using a trademarked name. Sellers are responsible for ensuring that their listings and shop content do not infringe intellectual property rights. The platform has also revised its policies on prohibited items. These rules identify products that cannot be sold on Etsy, and sellers should check them before listing an item. Etsy may remove listings that violate its policies, and repeated violations can affect a seller’s account. Other updates address how sellers communicate with buyers and manage orders. Etsy’s standards require sellers to describe items accurately, respond to buyers, and meet their stated shipping and processing commitments. The changes reinforce that sellers are accountable for the information and service they provide through their shops. Reviewing the updated policies can help sellers understand their responsibilities and avoid preventable problems. What the Changes Mean for Sellers These changes ask sellers to pay closer attention to how they present products, use AI and comply with Etsy’s rules. The first listing photo must be unedited, so sellers should choose an original image that accurately shows the item rather than relying on edits to improve its appearance. That requirement may affect existing listing images as well as new ones. Etsy’s AI policies also make it important to understand what the platform permits and to be transparent where disclosure is required. Sellers who use AI in their creative process should review the policy and make sure their listings meet its expectations. The rules do not remove the need for sellers to take responsibility for what they offer or how they describe it. More broadly, the other rule changes mean sellers should review their current practices instead of assuming older listings and workflows remain compliant. Checking photos, disclosures and shop procedures against the updated requirements can help sellers identify needed adjustments. Keeping up with Etsy’s rules is now part of maintaining listings that accurately represent products and follow the platform’s policies.
