Airbnb’s new checkout chore rules Airbnb is limiting the checkout tasks hosts can require guests to complete, addressing a long-standing complaint from customers who pay cleaning fees but are still given a list of chores. Under the new policy, hosts cannot mandate that guests strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry or remove trash from the property. The change applies to reservations made on or after November 20. It follows years of guest frustration over burdensome checkout instructions and hefty fines for failing to dispose of trash. Some guests have questioned why they should handle cleaning tasks after already paying a cleaning fee. The update changes what hosts may make a condition of checkout; it does not mean guests are barred from doing these tasks voluntarily. Airbnb has also set out limited exceptions to the rules, including requests to conserve water during droughts and to use bear-proof trash containers in areas where wildlife poses a risk. For guests, the restrictions could mean a rental stay with fewer required chores before departure. For hosts, they remove the ability to require several familiar cleanup tasks, a change that has prompted objections in Airbnb’s community forums. Why the policy is drawing backlash For years, guests have complained about checkout instructions that feel overly burdensome, along with hefty fines for failing to take out the trash. Many question why they should have to strip beds, wash dishes or handle other cleaning tasks after already paying a cleaning fee. Some hosts, however, say basic cleaning duties help maintain sanitary conditions and protect their properties. They also point to the costs and practical demands of getting a home ready for the next guests. From their perspective, limiting required chores may leave hosts bearing more of the risk. One host said the change could push Airbnb toward a hotel-like model, weakening what makes the platform appealing: the personal touch and a distinctive home environment. The host argued that guests can review listing requirements before booking and decide whether they suit them. They also warned that removing these expectations could prompt them to take their listing off Airbnb after twelve years. Exceptions hosts can still request Airbnb’s new limits do not prevent hosts from asking guests to take certain steps when local conditions make them necessary. The company says hosts may still ask guests to conserve water during a drought, for example. That request is tied to a specific circumstance, rather than a general checkout chore imposed on every guest. Hosts may also ask guests to use bear-proof trash containers in places where wildlife poses a risk. The exception recognizes that handling rubbish can involve more than tidying up: in some areas, secure disposal is needed to reduce the danger posed by wildlife. Airbnb’s policy allows that request while prohibiting hosts from mandating that guests remove trash from the property as a routine checkout task. These examples leave room for hosts to address local needs without restoring broad chore lists. The policy bars requirements such as stripping beds, washing and putting away dishes, starting laundry, or taking out trash for reservations made on or after November 20. But requests related to drought conditions or wildlife risks remain permissible, giving hosts a way to respond to those circumstances while the new checkout rules take effect. Airbnb’s broader cleaning-fee debate The checkout rules arrive amid years of debate over what guests should be expected to clean after paying a fee. In 2024, Airbnb faced scrutiny over price transparency, as hosts added cleaning fees after guests booked their listings. The company had already said in 2023 that more than 260,000 hosts had reduced or eliminated their cleaning fees. In May 2025, Airbnb began displaying total prices by default in search results worldwide. Those prices include fees but exclude taxes, giving travelers a clearer view of costs before they book. The new limits on required chores extend that effort to the experience after a stay is booked: guests may be less willing to accept a cleaning charge if they are also expected to do substantial cleaning themselves. The policy could affect how attractive Airbnb is to hosts, some of whom may decide the restrictions make the platform less appealing. At the same time, it may draw travelers seeking the convenience of a rental without feeling that they are paying for housecleaning while still being asked to clean the home themselves. The change therefore puts Airbnb’s competing guest and host expectations into sharper focus.
