Google Play Adds Venmo: Pay Apps, Games & More

Google Play has added Venmo as a payment option for U.S. users, allowing purchases of apps, games, and digital content through Venmo wallets and linked bank accounts or cards. The new integration means you can now use your Venmo balance or connected payment methods to buy subscriptions, make in-app purchases, and tip creators within compatible apps. To get started, simply go to Payment Methods in your Google Play account settings and link your Venmo account. This addition expands Google Play's existing digital payment options, which already include PayPal, Cash App, and major credit cards like American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and JCB in the United States. Why This Matters for Android Users The Venmo integration comes at a time when mobile spending is surging. According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, global user spending across the Apple App Store and Google Play Store reached over $167 billion in 2025 for in-app purchases—a 10.6% increase year-over-year. For many users, Venmo offers a familiar, convenient way to manage digital payments without needing to enter card details for every purchase. It also provides an alternative for those who prefer not to use credit cards directly for app store transactions. How to Set Up Venmo on Google Play Setting up Venmo as your Google Play payment method is straightforward: Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner Select Payments & subscriptions > Payment methods Choose Add payment method and select Venmo Follow the prompts to link your Venmo account Once linked, Venmo will appear as an option during checkout for eligible purchases. You can also set it as your default payment method if preferred. What You Can Pay For With Venmo on Google Play Google Play confirms that Venmo can be used for a wide range of digital content, including: Games and in-game purchases Apps and premium app features Add-ons and downloadable content Subscriptions to streaming and service apps Tips for creators within content-based apps The payment flexibility also extends to using Venmo's wallet balance or any linked bank accounts and cards, giving users multiple ways to fund their purchases. Google Play's Global Payment Experimentation While the Venmo rollout is currently limited to the United States, Google has been exploring alternative payment methods in other regions as well. Outside the U.S., the company has experimented with allowing users to pay for digital purchases using cash at nearby physical stores. These efforts reflect a broader strategy to make digital content more accessible by accommodating diverse payment preferences across different markets. A Competitive Digital Payment Landscape With Venmo now in the mix, Google Play offers one of the most comprehensive payment selections among digital storefronts. The existing lineup includes PayPal, Cash App, and all major card networks, giving users ample choice. This move also aligns with Venmo's growing role as a digital wallet beyond peer-to-peer transfers. As more platforms integrate Venmo for merchant payments, it further cements the app's position in the broader e-commerce ecosystem. For Android users who already rely on Venmo for everyday transactions, this update removes friction from app store purchases. And for Google, it's another step toward simplifying the payment experience for millions of users. The feature is live now, so eligible U.S. users can add Venmo to their Google Play account today and start using it for their next purchase.
