The Corporation wasestablished in 1978 under the Kenya Railways Corporation Act (Cap 397) of the Laws of Kenya to takeover the railways section in Kenya after the collapse of East Africa Community in 1977 which managedthe East African Railways and Harbors Corporation. The railway system in Kenya consists of both theMeter Gauge Railway (MGR) and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
