An eight-year-old Louisiana girl, Lillian Smart, has died after contracting Naegleria fowleri, a rare amoeba found in warm freshwater.

The infection can enter through the nose and cause a severe brain infection that is almost always fatal. US health officials report fewer than 10 cases on average each year.
