Job Description

Role Summary

  • The role of the Kiswahili teacher will be to deliver high quality and vibrant lessons that enable each student to reach their individual potential. The successful candidate will create a safe and exciting learning environment with high expectations and leading learning and teaching practices. He/she will develop formative and summative assessments in order to accurately report on the progress of students in line with the IB PYP curriculum. The teacher will ensure students recognize and use Swahili as a vehicle of communication, thought, reflection and self-expression.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, teach and assess engaging Kiswahili lessons aligned with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), supporting students’ language development across listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Collaboratively plan Units of Inquiry, integrating Kiswahili meaningfully into transdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Deliver developmentally appropriate, inquiry-based and differentiated lessons that support diverse learning needs and language abilities.
  • Create a safe, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student wellbeing, confidence and a love for language learning.
  • Use a range of formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor student progress and inform teaching, in line with IB PYP assessment practices.
  • Support students in using Kiswahili as a tool for communication, thinking, reflection and self-expression in age-appropriate ways.
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to students and maintain accurate records of student progress and development.
  • Actively participate in collaborative planning, professional learning communities and school events within the Junior School.
  • Demonstrate high standards of professionalism, child safeguarding and ethical practice, in line with the values and philosophy of the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development, particularly in IB PYP practices and early language pedagogy.

The requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education (Kiswahili).
  • 5 years of teaching experience in an international school.
  • Be conversant with the use of technology as a teaching and learning tool.
  • Teachers Service Commission (TSC) registration certificate.
