Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

The Oncology Nurse will provide specialized, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to oncology patients across the continuum of care, including prevention, treatment, symptom management, and palliative support. The role aims to ensure safe chemotherapy administration, optimal patient outcomes, and excellent patient experience.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care to oncology patients in accordance with established clinical protocols and standards.
  • Safely prepare, administer, and monitor chemotherapy and other oncology-related treatments.
  • Assess patients before, during, and after treatment, promptly identifying and managing adverse reactions or complications.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment plans, side effects, self-care, and follow-up requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments, care plans, and interventions.
  • Participates in cancer prevention and early detection activities.
  • Collaborate with oncologists, pharmacists, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated and patient-centered care.
  • Uphold infection prevention, patient safety, and quality assurance standards within the oncology unit.
  • Provide emotional support, counselling, and advocacy for patients and their families.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and continuous professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution
  • Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing from a recognized institution
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Valid Practice License as an Oncology Nurse.
  • Valid Certificate in BLS and ACLS
  • At least one (1) year of working experience as an Oncology Nurse in reputable health facility.
