Job Description
Key Purpose:
The Legal Counsel role requires a technically sound and commercially-minded lawyer who can support the business in identifying and proactively managing legal risks across all business operations, ensuring effective risk mitigation and reducing potential liabilities. By providing timely and accurate legal support for business initiatives, the role enhances the business’ decision-making and execution speed. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing overall legal advice to the CCBA – Kenya to ensure that effective, accurate and timeous legal solutions are provided to the company in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Effective Risk Mitigation: Identification and proactive management of legal risks across all business operations, reducing potential liabilities
- Optimized Contractual Terms: Successful negotiation of favorable terms in contracts, achieving cost savings and mitigating legal exposure
- Compliance Assurance: High compliance rates achieved with relevant laws and internal policies, ensuring the company operates within legal frameworks
- Effective Legal Support for Business Initiatives: Timely and accurate legal support provided for business initiatives, enhancing decision-making and execution speed
- Stakeholder Trust and Confidence: Strong relationships built with internal stakeholders, demonstrated by consistent delivery of reliable, business-oriented legal advice
Accountabilities:
- Compliance with legislation and policies across markets
- Efficiently drafting, negotiating and reviewing contracts
- Effectively managing legal expenditure
- Measurable decrease in identified legal risks and liabilities
- Skills, Experience & Education
Qualifications:
- Admitted attorney or advocate, or equivalent
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent
- Advanced degrees (LLM or MBA) are an advantage
Experience:
- 8 years post-qualification legal experience in litigation; employment law, commercial law, legal compliance, corporate governance, and contract management in a big law firm and / or corporate environment
- Demonstrated experience in managing legal budgets and controlling external legal costs
- Experience working / supporting a multinational corporate environment, preferably in the FMCG sector will be an added advantage.
Skills:
- Strong proficiency in drafting and negotiating complex agreements, with a focus on commercial sensible, solution-focused contract negotiation and drafting
- Resolving disputes and managing dispute resolution processes
- Strong analytical skills with a deep understanding of linking legal strategies to business objectives.
