Role Overview

  • We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Department - Maternity to lead and oversee maternity and neonatal services within the hospital The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, ensuring safe and high-quality maternal and newborn care, managing staff, and driving continuous improvement across the Maternity Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and management of the maternity and NICU departments
  • Develop, implement, and monitor departmental policies, protocols, and quality standards
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate maternity and NICU staff, including nurses, midwives, and support staff
  • Oversee patient flow in antenatal, labor & delivery, postnatal, and neonatal care units
  • Ensure safe, evidence-based care for mothers, newborns, and critically ill neonates
  • Monitor neonatal outcomes and lead interventions for reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality
  • Manage staff rostering, training, and performance development
  • Ensure optimal use and maintenance of maternity and NICU equipment, supplies, and budgets
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals for integrated care
  • Lead departmental quality improvement projects, audits, and morbidity/mortality reviews
  • Support family-centered care by engaging and educating parents throughout the maternity and NICU journey

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSCN) or Diploma in Nursing with specialization in Midwifery or Neonatal Nursing
  • Higher Diploma or Master's degree in Midwifery, Neonatal Nursing, Nursing Leadership, or Healthcare Management is an added advantage
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK)
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in maternity and/or neonatal care, with at least 3 years in a senior supervisory or leadership role

  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Excellent clinical knowledge in maternity and neonatal care, including NICU protocols skills
  • Ability to manage high-acuity environments and emergencies Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making
  • High integrity, professionalism, and commitment to patient and family-cantered care
  • Capacity to lead multidisciplinary teams in achieving clinical excellence
