Job Description

Job Summary

 

The incumbent will support compliance, ethics, and biosafety processes for extramural research activities in East Africa. This role ensures adherence to institutional, national, and international research compliance requirements, including safeguarding & financial conflicts of interest (FCOI), research ethics, biosafety, and regulatory reporting.

 

Responsibilities

 

Assist in developing a compliance oversight structure within the Research Office.

 

Conduct spot checks on grant activities to ensure compliance with the agency’s requirements and provide compliance review and approval on Pure AMM Grants Management System.

 

Undertake spot reviews of protocols approved by AKU-ISERC and their ethical compliance.

 

Provide support to establish a monitoring and evaluation system and visit to field offices to ensure adherence to compliance procedures.

 

Support in providing assurance reports with results on grant compliance and risk management activity.

 

Follow up on the implementation of recommendations and maintain updated tracking records.

 

Prepare and submit monthly reports on the status to the Research Office.

 

Conduct partner due diligence process for sub-awardees and facilitate Finance and Legal review of new funder due diligence.

 

Conduct risk-based inspection of labs, assessing onsite regulatory /policy compliance.

 

 Requirements

 

A Bachelor’s degree in finance/Audit or other relevant field.

 

Minimum of 2 years or more of relevant experience.

 

Experience with or ability to learn grant management and review system software and online training portals.

 

Related experience in coordinating and working in an academic setting would be an advantage.

 

Comprehensive knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal regulations as well as NIH, USDA, NIAID, and CDC guidelines. 

 

Strong knowledge of research compliance, ethics, and biosafety regulations.

 

Familiarity with donor compliance requirements (e.g., NIH, USAID, Wellcome Trust).

 

Experience in working with IRBs, ethics committees, and biosafety review boards.
