Job Description

Objectives of the Assignment

 

Equip guardians with practical knowledge in business development, marketing, record-keeping, and digital literacy.

 

Support participants to develop viable business plans and build on scaling up existing businesses for income generation.

 

Provide a Training of Trainers (ToT) component to build the capacity of SIF social workers to support post-training mentorship and program monitoring.

 

Expected Results

 

Entrepreneurship & Business Skills: Participants will understand key business management concepts including business models, market segmentation, pricing, and customer engagement.

 

Financial Literacy: Trainees will develop competencies in budgeting, bookkeeping, and cost-benefit analysis for small business planning and operations.

 

Business Planning: Each participant will draft a basic business plan using structured templates, supported by hands-on training and peer feedback.

 

Mentorship & Sustainability: Participants will be linked to ongoing mentorship and business support networks to enhance long-term income generation and resilience.

 

Training of Trainers (ToT) for Social Workers: Selected social workers will be equipped to provide ongoing support, monitor progress, and mentor beneficiaries, reinforcing sustainability of livelihoods outcomes.

 

Methodology and Delivery

 

The training will use a participatory approach adapted to low-literacy participants. Sessions will include interactive lectures, group discussions, practical exercises, and case studies. Social workers will be embedded in the training to receive a dedicated ToT component on supporting and assessing livelihood interventions.

 

Post-Assessment, Certificate Distribution, and ToT Session for Social Workers – Recap of facilitation techniques and support tools for continued mentorship (Expected Result 5)

 

Deliverables

 

The facilitator is expected to produce and submit the following:

 

Training Agenda and Materials: A detailed two-day training agenda including session titles, learning objectives, time allocations, and facilitation methods.

 

Training Handouts: Simplified participant-friendly materials aligned with each module, covering: Entrepreneurship fundamentals, Market analysis, Financial literacy, Business management and planning, Marketing techniques, Basic digital tools (e.g., spreadsheets). Content to be contextualized to local realities in Nairobi.

 

Tools and Templates: (aligned to expected results): Business Model Canvas – to help participants map and visualize key elements of a business (Expected Result 1), Household Budgeting Worksheet – a simple template to plan, track, and analyze monthly income and expenditures (Expected Result 2), Basic Bookkeeping Ledger – for recording daily sales, expenses, and profits (Expected Result 2 & 4)., Business Plan Template – a guided form for drafting business plans, including SWOT analysis, product/service description, financial forecasts, and operational plans (Expected Result 3), Marketing Plan Checklist – for identifying target markets, pricing strategies, and outreach methods (Expected Result 1 & 4).

 

Training of Trainers (ToT) Summary Guide – a short facilitation guide for social workers covering key follow-up strategies, monitoring tips, and mentorship support tools (Expected Result 5).

 

Assessment Tools: Pre- and post-training evaluation forms to measure knowledge gain and confidence levels, feedback forms to adapt training content.

 

Final report (max 10 pages) with key outcomes, challenges, recommendations and ToT summary.

 

Certificates of Participation for all attendees.

 

These deliverables must be provided and submitted to SIF no later than 5 days after training completion.

 

Logistics & Support

 

SIF will provide:

 

Training venue, audio-visual equipment, catering.

 

Stationery and training materials printing.

 

Coordination of participant transport stipends and attendance.

 

The Consultant will provide:

 

Curriculum and facilitation tools.

 

Own travel arrangements (SIF to cover agreed accommodation).

 

Coordination with SIF for additional material or co-facilitation needs.

 

Payment Terms

 

100% lump-sum payment upon submission and validation of all deliverables, including final report and signed attendance.

 

Consultant Profile

 

Bachelor’s degree (Business, Finance, or related), Master’s preferred.

 

5+ years in business development/financial literacy training.

 

Proven experience working with CSOs, NGOs, or community-based organizations in low-resource/fragile contexts.

 

Fluent in English (and Somali for Kismayo); experience with adult learning.

 

Technical Expertise: Solid grasp of small-business management, budgeting, financial planning, and use of basic digital tools (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets) for business tracking.

 

Facilitation Skills: Excellent communication in English and/or Somali, with the ability to simplify complex concepts for adult learners from diverse literacy backgrounds.

 

Interpersonal Abilities: Inclusive, culturally sensitive, and skilled at encouraging group participation in a safe learning environment.

 

Organizational Skills: Strong in planning, time management, and reporting, with a proven ability to deliver high-quality training on schedule and within budget.

The facilitator is required to read, understand, and sign SIF’s Child Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct prior to starting the assignment. They must maintain professional, respectful interactions with all participants and ensure protection from any form of exploitation or abuse.
