International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) is a pan-African Centre of excellence in research for development and capacity building in insect science and its applications. Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics. It does so by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base. The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities. icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya and has operations in more than 40 African countries as well as thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world. Job Description
Overall Purpose of the Job
- Ensure that all maintenance, machine, welding and fabrication requirements are met.
Specific Duties
- Repair all replacement parts as and when required.
- Maintain all machine/fabrication shop tools and equipment.
- Fabrication of all types of insect rearing cages, all metal and Perspex fabrications.
- Assist in making recommendations when designing insect rearing cages.
- Gas and arc welding responsibilities.
- All types of machine/shop brazing.
- Repair of all insect rearing cages.
- Any other tasks assigned by the Supervisor.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Artisan Certificate.
- Government trade test.
- Ability to organize one’s work to respect deadlines.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Dynamic and enjoys challenges.
- Demonstrated capacity to question one’s work and seek continual improvement in the services, systems or knowledge.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a busy production entity, both private and public.
- Understanding of engineering drawing and principles
