The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement the agricultural components of the study including developing the training manual.
- Identify and oversee securing and preparation of suitable demonstration farms for the study in the community
- Provide training of the farm trainers to ensure a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of vegetable production to improve participants health and nutrition and provide income for their families.
- Supervision of farm trainers at each of the demonstration farms and provide supportive supervision for the study participants at the demonstration farms as well as in their own farms
- Oversee and ensure equitable distribution of vegetables to study participants and seedlings from the model farms
- Troubleshoot agriculture challenges such as pests, disease, and production-related challenges, with the farm trainers and participants
- Ensure adequate supply and keep the stock records of required agricultural commodities
- Maintain proper documentation of all agricultural activities for the study, prepare and submit weekly reports
- Attend to any other duties as assigned by the study leadership
Vacancy Requirements:
- Diploma in Agriculture/Horticulture/Agronomy Mandatory
- At least four (4) years of relevant hands-on experience working in the field Mandatory
- Excellent knowledge of all aspects of agronomy related to the cultivation of high-value irrigated horticultural crops, including the use of organic and inorganic fertilizers and pest control Mandatory
- High level of competency in using Microsoft, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Mandatory
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili Mandatory
- Training skills including communication, needs assessment, course development, scheduling, implementation of training, and evaluation of the training impacts Mandatory
- At least (cumulatively) two years of administering community-based agricultural training in Kenya Mandatory
- Ability and willingness to work in Migori County Mandatory
- Experience with training smallholder farmers is an added advantage Added Advantage
- Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an added advantage. Added Advantage
- Understanding and familiarity with social media and technology is an added advantage Added Advantage
- Excellent communication skills – interpersonal, written, and verbal Mandatory
- Independent judgment and resourcefulness, understanding of the local social and geographical landscape as well as the community Mandatory
- Excellent ability to articulate complicated material to adult learners Mandatory
