To ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, mitigate risks, and promote a safe working environment in a high-risk steel smelting furnace facility.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
HSE Management
- Implement and monitor compliance with workplace health and safety (H&S) policies, procedures, and standards.
- Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and inspections to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety laws and industry regulations.
Risk Assessment & Hazard Control
- Identify potential hazards related to high-temperature operations, molten metal handling, and equipment usage.
- Develop and enforce risk mitigation strategies, including safety protocols for smelting operations.
- Maintain an up-to-date risk register for all operational processes.
Training & Awareness
- Develop and deliver H&S training programs tailored to the steel smelting environment, including fire safety, PPE usage, and emergency response.
- Conduct induction sessions for new employees and contractors on workplace safety procedures.
- Promote safety awareness campaigns and initiatives to foster a strong safety culture.
Incident Management
- Investigate accidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions, and prepare detailed reports with root cause analyses and corrective actions.
- Maintain incident records and track implementation of preventive measures.
- Coordinate emergency drills and ensure preparedness for incidents such as fire, explosions, or gas leaks.
Equipment & PPE Oversight
- Ensure proper usage, availability, and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Inspect safety-critical equipment, such as fire suppression systems and gas detectors, to ensure functionality.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to address equipment-related safety concerns.
Regulatory Compliance
- Liaise with regulatory authorities and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Prepare and submit mandatory reports, permits, and certifications as required by law.
- Stay updated on changes to H&S regulations and ensure timely implementation of new requiements
Environmental Safety
- Monitor air quality, fumes, and emissions from the smelting process to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
- Oversee waste management processes, including slag disposal and recycling.
- Implement environmental protection measures to minimize pollution and reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Diploma/Degree in Social Sciences or related studies.
- At least 5 years’ working experience in HSE roles in a manufacturing set up. Steel plants highly preferred
- Member of a Professional Body in good standing such as Health and Safety Professionals. The ideal candidate should have attended a supervisory course lasting not less than 4 weeks from a recognized institution.
- The job holder has a formal training in health, safety and environment.
