The Aga Khan Academies are an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). The AKDN is a group of development agencies with mandates that include the environment, health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalisation of historic cities. AKDN agencies conduct their programmes without regard to faith, origin or gender. In 2000, His Highness the Aga Khan initiated the establishment of the Aga Khan Academies, an integrated network of schools to be located in countries across Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East. When complete, the network of Academies will form a global learning community of about 18 schools in 14 countries. They will eventually serve approximately 14,000 girls and boys of exceptional calibre, graduating 1,500 students annually. The first Aga Khan Academy opened in Mombasa, Kenya in 2003, the second in Hyderabad, India in 2011 and the third in Maputo, Mozambique in 2013. The aim of the Academies is to develop future leaders with the skills and knowledge to support positive development in their societies. The Academies achieve this by recruiting exceptional young people from all backgrounds and providing them with the highest international standard of education. The academic programme offered by the Academies has been developed according to the principles of the widely-recognised International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB provides a challenging academic environment for students and allows their achievement to be measured against international standards. Job Description
The position
The Pastry and bakery chef will be responsible for the preparation, presentation, and innovation of all desserts and pastries, catering to a wide range of events, celebrations, and student needs within the academy. This role requires a creative, detail-oriented approach, with a commitment to providing high-quality, tasteful sweets and pastries that contribute to the school's vibrant dining environment. The role also emphasizes strict adherence to hygiene and safety standards to ensure a clean and safe kitchen environment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Operate the pastry& bakery section of the kitchen, collaborating closely with other cooks and kitchen staff to ensure smooth, coordinated operations.
- Prepare a wide variety of Breads, pastries, cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats, ensuring consistency in taste, quality, and appearance.
- Decorate, plate, and present Breads, pastries, and desserts in an appealing and tasteful manner, suitable for various events and occasions.
- Develop new, innovative recipes and dessert offerings tailored to the needs of the academy, introducing unique and appealing items to the menu.
- Monitor the inventory of ingredients and supplies, ensuring timely ordering and efficient management of stock.
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in the pastry& bakery section at all times, in accordance with health and safety regulations.
- Adhere to and implement proper sanitation procedures, including the regular cleaning and sanitizing of equipment and work surfaces.
- Assist in custom-baking special orders as requested by kitchen management to cater to themed events, student preferences, and dietary needs.
- Provide guidance and support to kitchen staff on baking techniques, recipes, and presentation.
The requirements
- O-Level Certificate, with at least a Certificate in pastry and bakery from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of 2 years as a pastry& bakery in a busy kitchen setting.
- Experience is mass production is an added advantage
- English proficiency required and creativity
