Kyle Verreynne’s rampaging innings of 101 from just 65 balls led Six Gun Grill Western Province to a DLS victory by 6-wickets in their opening game of the CSA One-Day Cup against the North West Dragons at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Saturday.
Verreynne reached his century from just 63 balls but departed softly just two balls later with the result in his hands when an unnecessary, improvised sweep shot went wrong. Nonetheless his remarkable innings, including 11 fours and four sixes, was instrumental in winning the match.
Eddie Moore’s calm, assured 41* from 47 balls and Mihlali Mpongwana’s boisterious 27* from just 17 balls ensured the result.
Openers Jono Bird (28) and Tony de Zorzi (13) failed to fire and Yassen Valli (16) fell to seamer Migael Pretorius as WP slipped to 74-3 – when Verreynne stamped his authority on preceedings.
Earlier a grafting century from Raynard van Tonder and useful contributions from captain Wihan Lubbe (46) and Senuran Muthusamy (34) helped the Dragons post a challenging total of 276-6 after choosing to bat first.
Floodlight failure reduced the target to 245 in 38 overs but the revised target was well within WP’s range thanks to Verreynne.
Van Tonder reached the landmark from 122 deliveries in his first match for the Dragons since moving from the Knights who were relegated to Division 2 and of last season and finished unbeaten on 129 from 145 balls with six fours and two sixes.
An inexperienced middle and lower order required van Tonder to play with caution deeper into the innings than he might have preferred and his approach became understandable when three wickets fell quickly at the start of the final 10 overs.
Left arm pace bowlers Beuran Hendricks (3-52) and Nandre Burger (2-45) were outstanding for the visitors delivering miserly overs with the new ball before keeping the scoring rate in check at the back of the innings.
Openers Lesego Senokwane (17) and Lesiba Ngoepealso adopted a careful approach in the opening 10 overs in which just 37 runs were scored but Lubbe upped the tempo with a run-a-ball 46 which included four fours and a six before holing to Eddie Moore in the deep off the excellent Hendricks.
But just as the Dragons appeared set to fall short of a competitive total Duan Jansen (33* from 22 balls) took charge of a seventh wicket stand of 65 with van Tonder smashing a four and two sixes to raise the home side to score they believed they could defend.
North West: Lesego Senokwane, Lesiba Ngoepe, Raynard van Tonder, Wihan Lubbe (captain), Senuran Muthusamy, Ruan de Swardt, Meeka eel Prince (wkt), Duan Jansen, Migael Pretorius, Caleb Seleka, Kerwin Mungroo
Western Province: Tony de Zorzi, Jonathan Bird, Yaseen Valli, Kyle Verreynne (captain, wkt), Edward Moore, Mihlali Mpongwana, Abdullah Bayoumy, Kyle Simmonds, Beuran Hendricks, Nandre Burger, Mthiwekhaya Nabe
RAIN WASHES OUT DOLPHINS-ROCKS GAME
Rain caused the CSA 1-Day match between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the Gbets Rocks to be abandoned at Kingsmead on Saturday.
Only 6.3 overs could be played after drizzle set in with the Rocks 32 without loss after new Dolphins’ 1-Day skipper Eathan Bosch won the toss and put the visitors into bat.
The game began under heavy skies with opening bowlers Okuhle Cele and Bosch delivering a maiden apiece against Rocks’ openers Janneman Malan and Clyde Fortuin. Malan on-drove the first boundary in the fourth over off Bosch while Fortuin hooked Cele for two sixes as the Rocks accelerated.
When the players left the field, Malan was on 16 off 22 balls (3x4s) while Fortuin was on 15 off 17 balls (2x6s).
The teams took two points each for the no-result.
