Kambo said the victory was made sweeter by the fact that the hosts are a very young team who held their own against their opponents.

“This one for me is particularly satisfying because it was a young Kenyan team. Two members of that team (Ben Stonewigg and Jadini Nzomo) had never been capped heading into this match. They played extremely well and Jadini ended up the MVP, which is a huge deal…to win your first cap and then go on to win the MVP award. It is simply amazing,” Kambo said.

He further said the duo’s feat is enough inspiration for stakeholders in the industry to intensify efforts to bring in more players into the sport.

“It tells me that the future of Kenyan polo is in good hands. We have young players coming up and for me what I enjoy the most is to see them doing very well. It is very satisfying and for me we will always try to bring more players into the game. That’s our priority here at Nairobi Polo Club and to build more successful teams,” the chairman said.

Kenya’s goals were scored by captain Archie Voorspuy and Nzomo as Harry Millar got on the scoresheet for the opponents.

Kambo described the three-day tournament a success and paid homage to the Zambians for giving the hosts a great challenge and maintain longstanding friendship between the two sides.

“I am very happy with the level of polo played this weekend. The Kenya-Zambia match was extremely tense. We were scoreless at halftime, which goes to show how hard everyone was defending and then it opened in the last one. Zambia were leading then Kenya came back to score so for me it has been a very satisfying weekend,” he said.

He added: “I think the weekend went extremely well…we were very happy, especially with the weather. We were a bit nervous that it was going to rain. That would have thrown a huge spanner in the works.”

Looking ahead to next weekend, Kambo said he expects end-to-end action when the crème-de-la-crème of the sport gather at the same venue for the 6-Goal Polo Tournament.

“That is also going to be a big one…6-Goal is also a relatively high handicap match for Kenya Polo so we look forward to three days of amazing polo next weekend,” he said.

In other matches of the day, Live Eye beat Capital FM 7-4F as 24:7 drew 3-3 with Prima Rosa.

SBM Bank were 8F-7 winners over Tusker Malt in the first tie of the day.
