Wrexham saw their move for a club-record signing cancelled by the EFL on deadline day - with the player set to compete with Paul Mullin in attack.
Mullin hasn't played for the League Two side since suffering a punctured lung in pre-season, meaning Wrexham have been without their star marksman during the early weeks of the campaign.
That hasn't exactly stemmed the flow of goals, with Phil Parkinson's side scoring 15 times - a league high - in their opening six matches.
Elliot Lee has taken up the goalscoring mantle, netting five goals and adding one assist.
But co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney clearly felt more was required, even with Mullin nearing a return, and tried to raid a fellow League Two club for one of their key stars.
The player in question was forward Luke Armstrong of Harrogate Town, with Wrexham reportedly bidding a club-record £450,000.Harrogate accepted the offer, which would have also been their club-record sale by a considerable margin.
The 27-year-old scored 28 goals across the last two seasons in the fourth division, meaning he was certainly an attractive option for Reynolds and McElhenney.
Both teams agreed terms on the deal, and submitted the relevant paperwork to complete the signing.
However, the EFL confirmed that the relevant documentation was not submitted on time, and cancelled the move.Wrexham initially laid out their intention to appeal that decision, but released a further statement on Wednesday confirming that there would be 'no reasonable chance of success' if they were to do so.The club also apologised to both Armstrong and Harrogate for the transfer falling through.
They wrote: "Having reviewed the additional information received from the EFL and considered this in the context of the submission of the documents for the transfer of Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town, the club have determined there is no reasonable chance of success if we were to appeal the EFL's decision to reject the transfer.
"Now this decision has been made, we wish to apologise to Luke as we were unable to complete the transfer by the deadline and Harrogate Town, who we are sure will be as disappointed as we are that the transfer will not now be completed in this window.
"The Club will be reviewing the circumstances and processes that have led to this outcome with all the relevant parties."
