Wrexham have announced the signing of Steven Fletcher until the end of the season.
The League Two outfit have been without Paul Mullin since he suffered a punctured lung in pre-season, which has ruled him out the talisman for the early weeks of the campaign.
Mullin’s absence hasn’t quite stemmed Wrexham’s flow of goals, however, with Phil Parkinson’s side having netted a league-high 15 goals in their opening six matches. Indeed, Elliot Lee has stepped up, netting five goals as well as an assist so far this season.
Nevertheless, Wrexham, who are famously backed by Hollywood’s Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney evidently feel more is required in the striker department, despite Mullin nearing a return.
Indeed, on Deadline Day they allegedly saw a club-record £450,000 bid for Harrogate Town’s Luke Armstrong rejected.
And the club have now announced the signing of Fletcher until the end of the season.The former Scotland international, who netted nine goals in 33 games last term, used to play alongside Wrexham’s James McClean at Sunderland.
On his move to North Wales, Fletcher told the club website: “Hopefully I can bring a lot of experience. I’m 36, I’m still fit and still raring to go.
“One of the biggest selling points was the ambition of the Club, and if I can help with that then great.
“I don’t think you can not see what has been happening at Wrexham – it’s been a great experience for the fans, players and owners so hopefully we can continue that.”
Moreover, on signing the striker, manager Phil Parkinson said: “I'm really pleased with the addition of Steve to the squad. He's missed football through pre-season but he's trained today with the lads and it's good to have him on board.
"His pedigree speaks for itself, and he's played most of his career at a very high level. He's an excellent professional and that's really important to fit in with the group here.”
