Burnley striker Wout Weghorst has posted an emotional farewell to Manchester United after his loan spell at Old Trafford last season.
The Netherlands striker moved to United on a temporary basis in January, with manager Erik ten Hag unable to spend major fees on players due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions.
Standing at 6ft 6in tall and possessing strong hold-up abilities, Weghorst was signed to add a new dimension to United's attack.
But while the 30-year-old produced solid performances at the beginning of his spell, his lack of goals ultimately became a major concern for United when he struggled to perform at peak levels.Weghorst failed to score in 17 Premier League appearances, with two goals in 31 games in all competitions.
United decided not to make his loan move permanent, and he returned to Burnley ahead of the new season.
Taking to Instagram, the forward posted a farewell message to his now former club.Alongside a montage of his best moments in a United shirt, Weghorst said: "Dear Manchester United fans. Thank you for everything.
"I really enjoyed every single second at this club, from winning silverware to scoring my first goal against Betis at Old Trafford.
"Dreams came true. Unbelievably proud to wear the badge. I wish you all the best for the future. Manchester United fans, thank you very much."
He then played a Manchester United-themed rendition of 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' as he showcased more of his favourite memories.Moving forward, Weghorst's immediate future at Burnley under Vincent Kompany is unclear.
The striker told Dutch outlet Voetbal International that he had an agreement with the Clarets that meant he would not play in the Championship last term after relegation. Understandably, therefore, the Dutchman is not popular among Burnley fans.He was booed by fans during a pre-season fixture at Turf Moor last month, with Kompany already stating that talks would be held with the forward over his future ahead of the new season.
Burnley have few options in the way of central strikers, with South Africa international Lyle Foster taking up the role during pre-season. Former Southampton striker Michael Obafemi is injured.
