A giant hole sitting a few metres from the entrance to the Nairobi Expressway at The Mall area of Westlands, is posing great danger to motorists and pedestrians.
The hole – which is half-filled with what looks like sewer water – sits right at the edge of the common road, just near the roundabout.
Every so often pedestrians can be seen walking dangerously close to the hole, some of them too deeply engrossed on their mobile phones to even notice the danger.
“It is very easy for someone to fall inside the hole because of its big size,” Clement Musau told Wananchi Reporting.
A huge concrete block painted in yellow and black is supposed to serve as the hazard demarcation sign.
The huge block is planted right at the edge of the hole, but residents say it does very little to warn motorists and pedestrians.
“You cannot clearly see the sign and the gaping hole because it is sandwiched between a group of bodada operators and a kiosk,” says Musau.
Some traders around the area told Wananchi Reporting that people walking around the spot for the first time can easily fall inside the hole, especially at night.
The hole is only a few metres from the Westlands bus stop – on Waiyaki Way.
Motorists diverting to join the Expressway are also at risk of hitting the hole especially if they are not familiar with the environment.
The residents are now asking the county government to fill up the hole, or at least demarcate it properly to avert crisis.
