Nzoia Sugar FC head coach Salim Babu has hailed his boys for their spirited display in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Gor Mahia FC at Sudi Stadium, Bungoma.
Nzoia struck late via a penalty to take a point against the FKF Premier League leaders as the hosts preserved their unbeaten home streak.
It was the latest indication of their title credentials as the Millers remained within four points of top spot after a brilliant start to the season.
After 18 matches, Nzoia find themselves in third place with 34 points, a superb turnaround for a team that was nearly relegated last year.
For Babu, the Millers will now shift their focus to Bandari whom they face at Mbaraki Sports Club, Mombasa over the weekend with an aim of collecting maximum points.
“I think the game was very fantastic and we played the way we wanted. But the only thing we never did is scoring goals and so if we had executed and used our chances to the fullest then the story would have been differently scripted.
Now we go to Mombasa to play Bandari and I think we will be at our best enough to take a win from the match”, said Babu.
The Bungoma based side have now gone seven matches unbeaten since losing 2-0 away to Police FC and the spirit they possess is enough to have them start talking about a possibility of good things this season.
Forcing a draw against the two heavyweights AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia at Sudi Stadium is reason enough that it will not be easy for any team to go to Bungoma and dictate things and escape with a win since Nzoia have turned that atmosphere a fortress this season.
And for coach Babu, the boys just have to keep playing and maintaining the levels and standards in doing things in their own style.
“We have to fight to keep this record because it is possible as long as we continue with the way we have been playing. It is the confidence that kept us pushing even when we were behind against Gor.”
In the first leg of this season, Nzoia have managed to cage Sofapaka 1-0, beat City Stars 1-0, walloped Wazito 4-0 and sliced Vihiga Bullets 2-1 at Sudi Stadium.
Away from home, they were held by Bandari (0-0), AFC Leopards (0-0) and Posta Rangers (1-1).
The question will still remain, will this be their season to laugh last and extinguish the title dominance of K’Ogalo and Tusker in recent years?
