National athletics coach Julius Kirwa is bullish Kenya will shine at the World Cross Country Championships set for this Saturday in Bathurst, Australia.
Kirwa who led the Kenyan team in a month-long training in Kigari, Embu, said the athletes are ready to tackle the hilly course in Bathurst after training under similar terrain.
The experienced tactician had blamed lack of adequate preparations for the poor show of Kenya during the last edition of the World Cross Country Championships held four years ago in Aarhus, Denmark where Kenya bagged only three medals; two gold and a bronze.
“Yes, that was our biggest concern in 2019 where we went without knowing the kind of course we were going to face. This time around we did our research and trained in anticipation of what we will be up against in Bathurst. We trained in the sun, hills and downhills and I am confident the team will perform.” Kirwa said.
Kirwa also praised the team of 28 athletes who will take part across the five disciplines: 6km Under-20 girls, 8km Under-20 boys, 10km senior men and women and the mixed relay race.
He however warned of the tough competition from fellow East Africa as well as the hosts Australia.
“We know the strength of our neighbours in Uganda and Ethiopia but we are also wary of the Australian team and I expect they will be very strong since they will be competing in their own backyard. My athletes are calm and I have told them to focus on the bigger picture which is to win the battle on Saturday.
I can only assure Kenyans that the team is motivated and ready to conquer the world. Let us support and pray for them and I am certain they will bring medals.” Kirwa added.
