Vibe-hacking is emerging as one of the most concerning AI-driven cybersecurity threats in 2025. According to Anthropic’s latest threat intelligence report, advanced AI systems like Claude are being misused by cybercriminals to carry out sophisticated attacks that previously required large teams of skilled hackers. Vibe-hacking involves using AI agents to craft psychologically targeted extortion messages and execute cyberattacks end-to-end. Anthropic revealed that one cybercrime group leveraged its AI coding agent, Claude Code, to infiltrate and extort data from at least 17 organizations across healthcare, government, emergency services, and religious institutions in just one month. By automating the process, criminals are able to scale operations quickly and demand ransoms exceeding $500,000, making these attacks both highly profitable and extremely damaging.
Unlike traditional hacking methods, AI-powered agents act as both consultants and operators. They not only write malicious code but also generate tailored ransom demands based on the value of stolen data, including healthcare records, financial credentials, and sensitive government information. This automation lowers the barrier for entry, meaning even a single individual can now carry out operations that once required entire hacking teams. Experts warn that this is among the most sophisticated uses of AI in cyber offense to date.
The misuse of AI extends beyond extortion cases. Anthropic’s report also highlighted how AI tools are being exploited to help fraudulent workers secure jobs at top companies, including Fortune 500 firms, using fake credentials and applications. These examples reveal a broader trend: AI agents are becoming key players in cyber-enabled deception and fraud.
