Police have launched investigations into an incident in which a five-year-old girl from Kamkunji area in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County was defiled and later died.
The girl's mother had left her at home on Thursday morning as she proceeded to work.
On her return in the evening, she realised the girl was unwell and she vomited the food she was given.
"I thought it was a case of food poisoning and general malaise is I took her to hospital," the mother said.
However, on arrival, the doctors did an examination on the girl and realised she had been defiled.
The girl succumbed while undergoing treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
County police commander Henry Zuma confirmed the incident, adding that officers are awaiting the hospital report as investigations proceed.
The matter was reported to the police and is being investigated.
