SteamOS on PC has become increasingly appealing for desktop gamers who want a smoother, console-like experience. After experimenting with Bazzite—a SteamOS-based system—on my Asus ROG Ally, I’ve been impressed by its streamlined interface and gaming-first features. Compared to Windows 11, which has been riddled with frustrating UI bugs and performance hiccups in my experience, SteamOS offers a refreshing change. Many gamers are now asking the same question I am: what’s stopping the full switch?
While Windows 11 remains the default choice for most PC gamers, its shortcomings are hard to ignore. Frequent UI glitches, background processes affecting performance, and inconsistent updates can break immersion and slow down gameplay. Even with Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox PC app improvements and new full-screen gaming mode, it’s still uncertain whether these changes can rival the fluidity and reliability of SteamOS. For players who value stability and a console-like feel, these issues are making alternative operating systems more attractive.
SteamOS delivers a gaming interface that feels clean, intuitive, and tailored for play—without the distractions of traditional desktop OS clutter. It integrates seamlessly with Steam’s ecosystem, offers easy controller navigation, and supports many PC games without complex setup. Features like quick resume and optimized resource allocation make it a strong contender for gamers looking to dedicate their machine to gaming rather than multitasking.
Despite its strengths, there are still two key reasons I haven’t moved to SteamOS on PC permanently: broader native game support and improved compatibility for non-Steam applications. Many titles run flawlessly through Proton, but not all games—and especially non-gaming software—work without extra effort. Once these hurdles are addressed, switching will be a no-brainer, and I’ll be ready to say goodbye to Windows 11 for good.
