Manchester United are likely to sign Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina on a loan deal this summer, according to a new report.
The Athletic's David Ornstein reports that the two clubs are in negotiations over a move for the Morocco international, but that he is likely to join United on a temporary basis to begin with.
United have pursued the midfielder for much of the summer transfer window, with reports in Italy claiming at the beginning of July that Erik ten Hag's side had agreed personal terms with Amrabat.
However, progress has since stalled on a deal for the 27-year-old, who reached the Europa Conference League final with Fiorentina last season.Furthermore, the player's agent is said to have grown frustrated with United due to the pace of the deal, according to The Telegraph.United's issue, The Athletic claim, is their current Financial Fair Play (FFP) situation, which is hindering their pursuit of Amrabat.Ten Hag's side are finding it difficult to sell players, with Fred and Anthony Elanga their only fee-paying outgoings this summer to date.
And according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, United only have an allowable loss of £15 million due to the FFP concerns, meaning they would be unable to negotiate a permanent deal for Amrabat over that figure without player sales in the remaining days of the transfer window.
Taking to Twitter, he explained: "Allowable loss still £15 million."Manchester United LBO [leveraged buyout] model also means the club is paying out interest (which is not exempt from FFP) and so this further constrains spending limits. Having said that, the club does still have capacity to buy this summer.
"One area where Manchester United have a poor record is player sales, where profits go directly into FFP calculations.
"Chelsea have generated £5.3m for every £1m of player sales made by MUFC over last decade."
