The recent resurgence of Western Cape teams in the DStv Diski Challenge has given Cape Town Spurs much-needed motivation as they make a return to the Reserve League.
For the past two seasons, the Cape Town teams [Stellenbosch FC and Cape Town City FC] have been making strides in the DStv Diski Challenge.
Stellenbosch defied the odds and won the league title in the 2021-22 season. In the same year, they also reached the final of the DStv Diski Shield competition where they lost to Kaizer Chiefs in Durban.
Last season Cape Town City also gave their best shot in the title race and only lost it on the penultimate weekend. They ended the campaign sitting in position three.
In that process, both clubs also saw a massive influx of the Diski Challenge youngsters into the first team.
With Spurs making their comeback in the league after the first team gained promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, the club is looking at matching City and Stellies to Challenge for the title.
Spurs will kick off their 2023-24 campaign with a derby against The Citizens on Sunday morning at UWC Stadium [10am].
Spurs team manager, Thabiso 'Shooz' Mekuto told the website that they are prepared and the club have a quality of players that are capable of getting a top-four finish this season.
“Over the past two seasons we saw what Cape Town City and Stellenbosch did and we draw some inspiration from them, we want to push ourselves to that level,” stated Mekuto.
“Our youngsters may not be used to the system, the lot of travelling, sleeping at the hotels but they can compete. They are used to competing. We also have about four players who are training with the first team and they will be playing in the Diski.”
Mekuto included: “We are anticipating a good season, we want to see ourselves at the top as well.”
Spurs will be coached by former Santos midfielder Tyren Arendse and will be assisted by Andy Helman. This will be their first season coaching in the Diski Challenge.
